New Venture for the Outpost!

FarmArt Biodiverse for Life

We are excited to announce that Last Organic Outpost and Biodiverse for Life will be working together on a coordinated effort to advance the "Food Everywhere" movement and to implement the Houston Urban Farm Belt. This effort will focus on installing gardens and farms in underserved neighborhoods throughout Houston. Please support us in this essential and life enriching endeavor. We welcome donations and most importantly, your personal and active involvement!

Equipment Donation
Last Organic Outpost would like  thank Steve Krebs and Chris Povinelli for the generous donation of a tiller and a mower for the tractor. With these key pieces of equipment we will be ready to start advancing the "Food Everywhere" movement.

Looking for a trailer
We now have the tractor and implements we need but still need a 20' trailer to be donated to the farm so we can take our tractor out and create other farm spaces. Spread the word!

Aquaponics Update
Work is continuing on the aquaponics demonstration area.  The east retaining way will hopefully be finished this weekend. Check out facebook for some pictures of this work in progress.

News from the EMILE STREET COMMUNITY FARM

Greetings!

We have been working on a irrigation system on the inside part of the farm.  We have raised sprinklers around the majority of the beds now and watering is so much easier. Thanks to Kelvin Williams for all his hard work in putting this project together and making it happen.

Last Tuesday, we participated in the City of Houston's Farmer's Market at the 5th Ward Multi-service Center. We had a great time and let a lot of folks know about the farm.  Thanks to Chris and Claire for helping us with the market.

Here's is a picture of Chris' sauteing Swiss Chard samples.

News from the EMILE STREET COMMUNITY FARM

Greetings!

Spring planting is underway! We lost a lot to the freeze but we are planting away getting ready for the new season. As Farmer Joe likes to say : We are going to pour it on for the next few weeks.
We are getting several loads of dirt this delivered this weekend and intend on filling out the Buck Street Extention with beds. So come out and release your inner farmer. Bring a friend and help us make beds, plant and water.

FARMING MARKET
Every Saturday 1 - 4

We have to decided to concentrate our efforts on having a Farming Market every Saturday at the farm instead of going to area local farmer's markets. We want to support Urban Agriculture in Houston's 5th ward by having our market only at the Emile Street Farm. The Farming Market is a fundraiser to support the urban farming effort.

The Farming Market will be held every Saturday from 1 to 4. See a certified picket (they will have on a green bandana or apron) to select and bag your produce. Look for honey from the farm and Marcella's Honey Balsamic Vinaigrette as well as guest chefs who will be cooking up greens on site. This weekend we will be featuring yams from Africa, brought by our friend Edwin.

The farm is in its winter glory with nearly two acres of greens and root vegetables from all over the world, so bring your family and come and visit as Saturday is going to be beautiful with a high around 60.

Also Mark and Kelvin will be providing music and an open mike for the afternoon.

FUNDRAISING
We are currently trying to raise money for a new tractor and a fence around the Buck Street Expansion. Last fall, someone poured water into the gas tank of the tractor and it is no longer operable. One of our plans for the spring is to have a "Hoods for the Hood" celebration where we install the great car hoods donated by Aerosol Warfare along the new fence. If you have any great ideas for fundraisers for these two huge efforts, it would be great if you'd share them. Email Marcella.

FOOD EVERYWHERE MOVEMENT
Help get the word out that we all need to be growing food everywhere we can by supporting the farm and buying a "Food Everywhere" bumper sticker. We will be selling "Food Everywhere" bumper stickers and car magnets in the near future, so if you are interested in getting one (or several!), let us know.

PROGRAMS
We currently have two new exciting programs underway:

Jr Urban Farmer - We are starting a pilot program with St. Stephan's Episcopal School this Friday where the kids will work with us for 8 to 10 times. Some of the subjects covered will be bee-keeping, vermiculture, aquaponics, chickens and of course, Farming! We are currently meeting on several Friday afternoons from 1:30 to 3:30 at the farm. If you are interested in helping out, email Marcella.

Share a Tree, Meet a Friend - There are a lot of folks in the 5th Ward would like a fruit tree in their yards, including quite a few elderly. We hope to make this a reality for them by having them sign a register where folks who want to help out can go to select a name, make a donation which will supply the tree and to help plant tree with the neighbor. We are currently looking for a source of trees that are good for this area and are reasonably priced. If you are interested in helping us get this program off the ground, please email Marcella.

WORKING FOR GREENS!
We need you to help keep the farm beautiful! Please come out on the weekends and help. The farm and farm community is built through all of our participation. 2 hours work equals a bag of greens for your supper. What a deal!
