Drought Technology

When the recent hot weather we and all the good help have been working on ways to conserve water using what our friend Cleveland has coined drough technology. We are focusing on water catchment, aquaponics as functional food art, drip lines, creating ollas and experimenting with new soil mixes to enhance the soil's ability to hold moisture.

Last weekend we added the liner to the aquaponics pond and used the water we caught from last month's brief rain - This weekend we will adding minnows, goldfish and native plants to create a beautiful environment for the FarmFest on November 5th. We are looking for a medium to make vertical grow beds starting with the fence around the pond.  Any suggestions on a good medium we could use would be appreciated, with a focus on recycled and inexpensive solutions at the top of the list.

We have also been creating ollas (clay pots buried in the soil filled with water).

The process is simple. Take 2 clay  pots, cover up the hole in the bottom of one of them, then glue the two pots together. Paint the top with white paint to inhibit evaporation. Bury the pots about 3 feet apart with the white top showing and fill with water.  It will slowly leach into the  ground and provide moisture.

Our friend Mark has installed new drip technology in several of the beds and has introduced a new idea of mixing clay into the soil mix which has been increasing the amount of moisture being retained.

Come out the weekend and see all of these new ideas in action!

See our Facebook group page for pictures of all of these ideas we are implementing.
